About the museum
The Kleiderbügelmuseum belongs to the Basel family business Dunkel-Service. Its founder, Hans Martin Dunkel, took over the Swiss representation of a Swedish hanger manufacturer in 1974 and began collecting coat hangers the same year out of personal interest. Over time this passion grew into a collection that was set up as a museum in the company's premises on the Birsstrasse in 1987.
Two complete collections belonging to other collectors were added later, acquired in 1989 and 1994. Today the museum displays more than 4,000 examples and uses an everyday object to tell the story of its development, from the simple wooden hanger to custom designs for hotels, theaters and fashion houses; among them are rare models that have not been produced for a long time.
Special pieces include a hand-carved hanger from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea with the figure of a guardian spirit, an oversized hanger for the ceremonial robes of bishops and cardinals, and a German hanger from the postwar period that bears witness to material shortages and closed borders. The museum has no fixed opening hours: it opens by advance booking for groups of ten or more people, who can be shown around individually.
