Temporarily closed (expected until 2028). Since 2025 the museum building has been undergoing complete renovation by the City of Geneva and is closed to visitors. During this time MAMCO is showing projects at other locations (for example in the Musée Rath and at the archaeological site Saint-Antoine) and abroad.

About the museum

MAMCO grew out of a citizens' initiative: from 1973 the Association of Friends campaigned for a museum of contemporary art in Geneva. In 1994 the museum opened thanks to eight founders who joined together in the Fondation MAMCO. Later the foundation, the canton and the city of Geneva jointly took over funding and sponsorship; the museum is run by a public-law foundation that goes back to a law passed by the Grand Council of Geneva in 2004.

It was housed in the former industrial building in the Quartier des Bains, the “Bâtiment d'art contemporain”, which it shares with other art institutions. The listed building eventually no longer met the energy and climate standards for conserving the works and no longer offered enough comfort for growing visitor numbers.

Following an architectural competition in 2020/21, the design by the Berlin firm Kuehn Malvezzi with CCHE Genève was chosen. It is intended to reveal the building's original structure, recover the double ceiling height in the entrance area and create a new entrance on Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers. In December 2024 the last exhibition in the building closed, the collection was moved out, and since 2025 the renovation, expected to last about 48 months, has been under way. Until its return to the building, MAMCO is showing its projects at other locations in Geneva, together with partners such as the Musée Rath or the archaeological site Saint-Antoine.
