About the museum
The Musée de Carouge is a municipal museum and opened in October 1984. The impetus came from a large donation by the Geneva painter Émile Chambon to the city; before that, parts of the population had long been calling for a museum for Carouge's heritage. All the artworks the city already owned were entrusted to the new museum.
The museum is housed in the Montanrouge house on the Place de Sardaigne, a typical building of Vieux-Carouge. It was built between 1788 and 1790 for the royal watchmaker Jean Antoine Demontanrouge, when Carouge still belonged to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The city bought the house in 1977, and in 1980 it was converted for the museum. An extensive renovation since 2019 brought new exhibition spaces and a modern entrance pavilion; the Mediterranean garden behind the house is open to everyone.
The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, enamel and prints, as well as several thousand pieces of fine earthenware from the Carouge ceramic manufactories, which shaped the town for over a century. Since 1987 the museum has held the Concours international de céramique every two years; the prize-winning work enters the collection. The museum is open only during the temporary exhibitions.
