About the museum
The museum refers to the building, which was erected in 1884 and has been preserved in its original state ever since. Since 1997 it has been protected as a historic monument of regional importance, and it was restored in 2000. It preserves the spirit of Switzerland's first regional museums and is therefore regarded as a "museum of museums" in its own right, in which building, collection and presentation form a unity.
In the attic, the exhibition is still arranged as its founders imagined it: an encyclopedic display meant to give an overview of the world at a glance. The objects and documents on show come from donors in the surrounding area and tell of the life of the local community in the 19th century.
In the modern ground floor, the private museum shows a temporary exhibition every year on a topic of local or regional history. It also organises lectures and cultural events.
