About the museum
The Museo Poschiavino presents the history, art and culture of the Valposchiavo through an extensive collection of documents and historical objects. It was founded in 1950 and is housed in the Palazzo de Bassus-Mengotti, a Baroque building of high artistic and architectural value dating from 1655. After careful restoration, the house opened to the public in 1985.
The permanent exhibitions in the palazzo cover, among other things, farming in the valley, the domestic life of the owning families and the history of the palace itself. The museum documents the life, work and emigration of the people of the Valposchiavo; the emigration of confectioners who ran cafés all over Europe is a recurring theme.
The museum also includes a second site in the village center of Poschiavo, the Casa Tomé, a farmhouse of medieval origin. Together with the Mulino Aino in San Carlo and other houses, the museum is run by the Musei Valposchiavo Foundation, which looks after the collections and offers guided tours and events throughout the year.
