About the museum
Casa Console is a 19th-century patrician house in the village center of Poschiavo. It takes its name from Antonio Semadeni, who served as the Swiss consul in Warsaw. Inside, the original furnishings and partly gilded stucco ceilings have been preserved; on a balcony on the second floor stands a bronze statue of the young Mozart by Ernest Barrias.
The art collector Ernesto Conrad, born in Budapest in 1927 and for many years co-owner of a Munich publishing group, moved to Poschiavo in the early 1980s. In 2002 he founded the foundation that bears his name, bought Casa Console and had it restored, so that the art museum could open in December of the same year. On that occasion, the municipality of Poschiavo made him an honorary citizen.
The core of the collection was paintings from Conrad's own holdings. Since then it has been steadily expanded with works of Romanticism and now comprises more than one hundred oil paintings and drawings from the period in which the house was built. Represented are painters of German Romanticism such as Carl Spitzweg, Eduard von Grützner, Franz von Defregger, Franz von Lenbach and Johann Friedrich Voltz, as well as Swiss artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries such as Alexandre Calame, Benjamin Vautier and Giovanni Segantini. In the concert hall on the fourth floor, the foundation also hosts concerts, painting courses and other cultural events.
