About the museum
The Museum Mollis has existed since 1975 and displays a growing collection of documents, photographs and objects on the history and development of the village, its residents, and their lives and work. It is housed on the first floor of the "Hof", one of the many patrician houses of Mollis.
The late Baroque residential house was built by Zeugherr (an official) Caspar Schindler in 1786/87 on the southern edge of the village, to plans by his brother, the architect Conrad Schindler. Together with the older "Höfli" and a garden pavilion, it forms an ensemble that includes a French garden. The building was restored between 1970 and 1973, and in 1975 the museum moved in.
The permanent exhibition "Altes Handwerk" (Old Crafts) is devoted to the craftspeople of the past; in the outbuilding, an old woodworking machine works as it did a hundred years ago. A second permanent exhibition explains Glarus geology and fossils: the canton of Glarus is the only one in Switzerland to have a complete geological record of the last 300 million years. On the first floor, a section of the former exhibition recalls Fritz Zwicky, astrophysicist, rocket researcher, inventor and alpinist. The museum is also suitable for school classes.
