About the museum
The Museum Murten is among the oldest museums in the canton of Fribourg. Since 1978 it has been housed in the former town mill, which stands outside the town walls below the castle. The building itself tells, on its floors, of more than five centuries of its own history.
The permanent exhibition “A House Tells Stories” extends over five floors and spans around 6,000 years. It begins with the lakeside settlements of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, leads via the Celts and Romans to life and work in the medieval town, and shows Murten as a jointly ruled subject territory of Bern and Fribourg, through to the transition into the modern era. Finds and everyday objects bring the people of each period to life.
A staged multimedia show recounts the events of the Battle of Murten in 1476. Besides the permanent exhibition, the museum shows temporary exhibitions and offers guided tours, workshops and programmes for schools. The Pro Museo association supports the museum morally and financially.
