About the museum

The museum goes back to the Antiquarische Gesellschaft Wetzikon, which was founded in 1887 and built up its own collection. Its foundation consisted of pile-dwelling finds by the researcher Jakob Messikommer from Wetzikon-Robenhausen, a site that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011 together with other pile-dwelling settlements. The collection moved through several temporary storage locations until it found a home in 1958 in the Haus "zur Farb".

The house was built in 1758 by a dyer and later served, among other things, as a factory and as a power station; today it is a listed building under cantonal protection. After a complete renovation, the local museum moved into the newly designed rooms in 1985 under the auspices of the town of Wetzikon; these also include the neighbouring "Blaufarb". In 2002 the museum was expanded to include the first floor of the half-timbered house.

Since 1 June 2011, the newly founded Museumsverein Wetzikon has run the museum under a service agreement with the town. The collection includes finds from the Neolithic and Roman periods, textiles, musical instruments, household items, school books and the estates of well-known Wetzikon personalities. The permanent exhibitions are devoted to the pile dwellings and the Romans; in addition there are changing special exhibitions, workshops and events.
