About the museum

The Ziefen Village Museum was opened in 1980 on the initiative of Hedi Müller. At first a municipal committee ran it; since 2015 the independent private Museumsverein Ziefen has operated the museum and manages the municipality's historical and cultural heritage on its behalf. The museum is located in the attic of the Eien primary school building; in the cellar there is a visible storage area that can be visited on request.

The permanent exhibition is devoted to rural domestic culture, housekeeping, farming and trades. Starting from Posamenterei (silk ribbon weaving), it shows how the major currents of the age shaped village life: the farmers wove for the world, and the world was interwoven with the village. On display is a ribbon weaver's parlour with a Schlagstuhl loom from around 1880, which was electrified around 1905, as well as a foot-driven bobbin winding machine, a card punching machine and a lacing board for lacing the punched cards. Looms from 1750 and 1890 can be seen in operation, and on the 40-shuttle loom, ribbons with flower patterns are still made today.

The museum collects, researches and classifies objects and provides the background stories to them. The programme is complemented by lectures, events and the book for Ziefen's 800th anniversary celebration.
