About the museum
At the initiative of the Provins, a foundation was set up in 1982 to give Valais a museum of vine and wine. After the search for a location, the concept of Siders and Salgesch was chosen; it was realized by ethnologist Isabelle Raboud. The vineyard trail was inaugurated in 1990, the Zumofenhaus in Salgesch opened in 1991, and the museum in the Château de Villa in Siders in 1992.
In 2000 the museum had to leave the Château de Villa because it became an Önothek (wine shop and tasting room). At the same time the Salgesch site grew through an adjoining barn. From 2009 a new exhibition space for temporary exhibitions has been available in Siders, next to the Château de Villa. In 2015 Salgesch was redesigned by Holzer Kobler from Zurich and has since been called the Weinmuseum.
Today the museum forms a unit of two exhibition sites and one vineyard trail. In Salgesch the permanent exhibition in thirteen rooms shows the history of Valais viticulture, from the work of the winegrowers and soils to the grape harvest, cellars and tasting. In Siders, changing thematic exhibitions are the focus. The vineyard trail links both sites and the German- and French-speaking parts of Valais.
