About the museum
The Army Flying Museum, formerly the Museum of Army Flying, stands beside the working airfield at Middle Wallop in Hampshire. It tells the story of aviation in the British Army, starting with the Royal Engineers' balloon sections and the Royal Flying Corps of 1912, and continuing through the air observation post squadrons and the Glider Pilot Regiment. The Army Air Corps was formed in 1957 when the last two were merged.
The museum raised money for a two-phase development called Project Eagle. The first phase, completed in 2017, created a memorial to more than 5,000 members of Army flying who died in service. The second phase, in 2018 and 2019, was a refurbishment costing about £2.6 million with lottery support, which included new activities for the community, volunteers and schools.
The collection includes more than 30 fixed-wing and rotary aircraft in two halls, among them the Allied gliders of the Second World War, early Army helicopters such as the Sycamore, a record-setting Westland Lynx and, since 2024, an Apache attack helicopter. Smaller displays cover trench art, flying clothing and a 1940s home front kitchen, and an outdoor play park is themed on aviation.
