About the museum
Belgrave Hall is an early 18th century house in the Belgrave district of Leicester. It was built between 1709 and 1713 for Edmund Cradock, a Leicester hosiery merchant, who died soon after the house was finished. Over the following two centuries it passed through a series of owners, among them the Simons, Vann and Ellis families and Thomas Morley.
In 1845 the house was bought by John Ellis, a railway entrepreneur who helped bring the railways to Leicester. His daughters continued to live there, and the last of them, Margaret, died in 1923. Leicester Corporation, the predecessor of the city council, bought the property in 1936 and opened it to the public as a museum.
The house is surrounded by about two acres of gardens, including a walled garden with Edwardian roses, old mulberry trees and seasonal flower beds. After a long period as a museum, the council moved the house to a heritage-site role with limited summer opening, and in May 2025 it suspended Belgrave Hall as a heritage venue. The venue is no longer listed among the open sites on the Leicester Museums website, and no reopening date has been published.
