About the museum
Borth Station Museum occupies the old ticket office, waiting room and station manager’s office at Borth railway station, which opened in 1863 on the Cambrian line. The buildings had become derelict, and a small team of local volunteers campaigned and fundraised for years to save them. The museum opened in 2011 as a community heritage centre.
The volunteers, known as Borth Station Volunteers, also work on the platform and the station surroundings and have won awards for community involvement and environmental improvements. The group has around 15 members and welcomes new volunteers and supporters.
The collection consists of hundreds of railway and community items that have been donated or loaned. They show the importance of the railway to Borth and the surrounding area, where fishing, coastal shipping, lead mining, agriculture and tourism all played a part. The renovated ticket office keeps its original hatch, desk and fireplace and displays artefacts and temporary exhibitions. The waiting room holds interactive displays, including a model railway, a cabinet of railway items and a short film about the station and the area. In the station manager’s office, volunteers answer questions and sell souvenirs and second-hand books.
