About the museum

Buckie & District Fishing Heritage Centre was formed in March 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts, each of whom donated £10 to get it started. It began in a small room in Buckie Public Library, which soon became too small for the growing collection of records and objects.

The centre then leased the former caretaker's cottage behind the library from The Moray Council. The cottage had been empty for many years, and after it was redecorated and furnished it opened to the public. A new thirty-year lease on the cottage and nearby ground has since been agreed.

The collection was mostly donated by local people and is larger than the cottage can show. It includes one of the biggest model boat collections in the north-east of Scotland, photograph albums with more than 7,000 pictures, and a small reference library on local history and fishing boats. A database of boats built in local boatyards from the late 19th century to the present can be searched online free of charge. Volunteers staff the cottage on a rota, school groups visit regularly, and groups can arrange visits outside normal hours. The centre also looks after the Seamen's Memorial Chapel on New Street, for which visitors can borrow a key.
