About the museum
Burnham-on-Crouch & District Museum is an independent local history museum on the waterfront at the end of Coronation Road. It is a registered charity run by members of the Burnham History Society, is an accredited museum and receives no local authority funding.
The museum began in a small room off the High Street and moved in the late 1990s to its present building, a former boatbuilders' workshop of about 1910. A National Lottery grant paid for an extension that added the large lower gallery and a mezzanine.
The upper gallery holds the reception, a library and displays on local fossils, prehistory, boat building and the growth of the town, together with part of the archive of documents and photographs. The lower gallery covers farming and rural life, the Mildmay Iron Foundry, which cast piano frames for most British piano makers, and the town's oyster fishery. A bookshop with local books and gifts completes the visit.
