About the museum
The Foulness Heritage Centre is housed in the former Foulness primary school at Churchend. The Foulness Conservation and Archaeological Society converted the empty school in 2002, with volunteers doing the renovation and grants from Awards for All and QinetiQ. The centre opened in February 2003.
Its displays focus on the rural life and civilian population of Foulness Island, not on the military history of the firing range that surrounds it. Donated items from past and present islanders show the island's industry, home life and country pursuits through the decades. The centre closed over the winter of 2005 to 2006 to reorganise the displays, and its project was a runner-up in the 2003 Sanctuary Award for conservation on the defence estate.
Because Foulness is a Ministry of Defence site, visitors reach the centre through MOD Shoeburyness and must follow the signed route. The society also runs talks, walks and group visits throughout the year.
