About the museum
Mauchline is the town where Robert Burns spent one of the most creative periods of his life, and much of his best-known poetry was written at nearby Mossgiel Farm. Burns and his wife, Jean Armour, lived for a time in a room that is now part of the museum.
The displays bring his Mauchline years to life with original manuscripts, personal objects and historic artefacts. Contemporary artworks by Scottish artists, including Timorous Beasties and Calum Colvin, hang alongside them and offer a modern view of his legacy. Exhibitions change regularly, and the museum holds events through the year, among them the annual Burns Birthday in Mauchline celebration.
A visit also includes Nanse Tinnocks, an alehouse that Burns knew and mentioned in his writing. It now holds what is described as the largest public collection of Mauchline Ware in the world, together with historic curling stones, for which the town is known. The Robert Burns Collection is recognised as being of national significance as part of the Burns Scotland Partnership.
