About the museum

Dundonald Castle stands on a hill above the village of Dundonald in South Ayrshire. The hill has been used for around 3,500 years. The present tower house dates from the 14th century and was linked to King Robert II, the first Stewart king and grandson of Robert the Bruce. It also has links to the Stewart, Wallace and Cochrane families.

The castle has barrel-vaulted ceilings and wide views over the coast. Visitors can see the ground floor, climb stone and metal stairs to the upper levels and visit the prison area.

The visitor centre at the foot of the hill is run by the Friends of Dundonald Castle. It holds an exhibition on the history of the site, a display of finds from archaeological excavations on the hill, a café and a small gift shop. Volunteer guides lead tours of the castle, and the grounds have picnic areas and woodland walks.
