About the museum
Bury Transport Museum is housed in the Castlecroft Goods Warehouse, a stone railway building from the 1840s that is now Grade II listed. It stands directly opposite Bury Bolton Street station on the East Lancashire Railway.
The museum was started in 1973 by volunteers of the East Lancashire Railway. It had to close in 2003 because of problems with the roof and was refurbished and reopened in 2010. Since then it has changed its displays regularly and has shown visiting locomotives, among them a famous streamlined steam engine on static display and a tank locomotive on loan from the National Railway Museum.
The displays follow transport and everyday life in the industrial North West through the twentieth century. Cars, lorries, buses and railway items stand alongside period costumes and hands-on activities. Well-known objects include a horse-drawn tram that once served as a chip shop and the steam roller Hilda.
