About the museum

The Castle and Regimental Museum in Monmouth tells the story of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, the only present-day regiment to have survived from the Militia. The regiment traces its origin to a muster in 1539, developed into a county force, endured sieges in the Civil War and served as a Militia regiment for about two centuries. In 1877 it became a Reserve Engineer regiment and has served in the wars of the 20th century.

The museum is housed in a 19th-century stable wing attached to Great Castle House, inside the grounds of Monmouth Castle. It opened to the public in 1989 and was opened by the regiment's Honorary Colonel, the Duke of Gloucester. It has received a Prince of Wales Award for its contribution to the culture and environment of Monmouth and is an accredited museum.

Displays cover the Militia system, the importance of the Dukes of Beaufort and the regiment's distinctions, such as its double Royal title, its colours and its Freedoms. Smaller sections deal with the early defences of Monmouth and its castle, including archaeological finds, with the Home Front, with HMS Monmouth and with recent conflicts in the Balkans and Iraq. The regiment's archives can be consulted by appointment.
