About the museum
Castle Douglas Art Gallery opened in 1938 after the artist Mrs Ethel Bristowe gave the building to the town. It was upgraded in 1996 with lottery funding distributed through the Scottish Arts Council.
Today the gallery is one of the venues of DG Culture, the cultural service of Dumfries and Galloway Council. It shows a programme of contemporary art and craft, with group and individual exhibitions by artists from across the region. The programme runs from March until Christmas, and the gallery closes between exhibitions while the next one is installed. The gallery can also be hired for events.
