About the museum
Conwy’s link with mussels and the river goes back to Roman times. Pearl fishing was a notable local trade, and in the early nineteenth century Conwy was one of the most important pearl fisheries in Britain. The museum records that several kilos of pearls were sent to London jewellers every week, and that a Conwy pearl is set in a royal crown.
The museum is housed at the mussel purification plant on The Quay beside Conwy Castle. Visitors can learn how mussels are gathered and purified, see behind the scenes of the harvesting process and find out how traditional fishing methods are still used today.
