About the museum
Corwen Museum opened in 2015 and is run by volunteers of the Edeyrnion Heritage and Cultural Society, a registered charity. The society aims to teach the public about the history, culture and wildlife of Edeyrnion and the Dee Valley, and to collect, care for and show objects of educational interest.
The museum is housed in a former chapel on London Road, beside the A5. The railway reached Corwen in 1865 and brought workers from outside Wales, and as the town had no English-language chapel they raised money to build one, which was finished in 1879. Its bricks came from Ruabon by rail, and the building was known locally as Capel Coch, the Red Chapel. After about 85 years as a chapel it closed, and in 1993 it was converted for community use, first as a 'tele-cottage' offering internet access. The heritage society took it on as a museum in 2015.
The displays tell the story of Corwen and the area around it from prehistoric times to the present day, using objects and information boards. A display on the outside of the building shows a map and notes on places of interest in the town.
