About the museum
Cresselly has belonged to the same line of owners since the Bartlett family held it in 1564. It passed to the Allen family in 1728 when John Allen married the heiress Joan Bartlett. The present house dates from 1769 and was built by Captain John Bartlett Allen to replace an earlier building that stood too close to the estate's coal mines.
The estate lay on coal reserves, which were mined and shipped from Cresswell Quay and provided much of its income. The family had close ties to the Wedgwoods, and the Darwins were cousins. The house is a Grade II* listed Georgian building, and its park and gardens are listed Grade II.
The house is still lived in by the Allen family. It is opened to visitors only on a small number of announced dates, on pre-booked guided tours.
