About the museum
Pembroke Museum is housed in the former courtroom on the first floor of Pembroke’s Georgian Town Hall, a Grade II listed building on Main Street. It is an independent museum run entirely by volunteers. It began roughly a decade ago as a small display of local photographs and stories and has since grown through gifts from the community into a collection about the history of the town, which was the birthplace of Henry VII.
The collections include silent films by the early film-maker William Haggar, a collection of nineteenth-century Welsh costume, an exhibition of toys, maritime objects, and an archive of photographs, postcards and recorded memories of local people. Murals in the foyer and on the upper landing, painted by George and Jeanne Lewis, show Pembroke’s story from the Stone Age to the early twentieth century.
The museum has earned full accreditation under the Welsh Government’s museum scheme, which recognises that a volunteer-run museum meets the same national standards as larger, professionally staffed ones. An oral history project invites visitors to record their own memories of the town.
