About the museum

Croxteth Hall was the seat of the Molyneux family, the Earls of Sefton. According to the operator, it grew from a 16th-century hunting lodge into an Edwardian mansion, and it sits in about 500 acres of green space. Alongside the hall the estate includes a Victorian walled garden and a working home farm.

The walled garden began as the kitchen garden for the hall. Its glasshouses, heritage planting and seasonal displays have been restored, and it also houses Liverpool's historic botanical collection. The estate is now managed by Liverpool City Council and run with Liverpool City Halls, which also operates St George's Hall and Liverpool Town Hall, as a community space for leisure, education and heritage.

Visitors see the hall mainly through guided tours of about 90 minutes on selected dates. These take in rooms such as the Drawing Room and the grand staircase, and the servants' quarters, with stories about the Sefton family, royal visitors and the household staff.
