About the museum
Merseyside has a firefighting tradition of about 180 years, and Liverpool was among the first cities to put a steam fire engine into service, decades before other cities followed. The Heritage and Education Centre keeps this history alive at the headquarters of Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service in Bootle, where it is run by a charitable trust connected with the service.
The centre displays memorabilia, vintage fire engines and equipment from earlier generations of firefighters. It also looks after one of the largest photographic archives of any fire and rescue service in the United Kingdom, with more than 80,000 digitised files and pictures.
Because the centre sits within a working fire service site, it can be visited only on pre-booked days.
