About the museum
The Davidstow Moor RAF Memorial Museum grew out of a memorial dedicated in 2003 to everyone who served at RAF Davidstow Moor, a Second World War airfield on the edge of Bodmin Moor. The airfield opened in October 1942, when a convoy of American airmen stopped to refuel on the way to France, and it was used until 1945.
Despite its height of nearly a thousand feet above sea level, the site was an important base for search and rescue flights for aircrews that had come down in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Aircraft patrolling the Atlantic also kept U-boats from surfacing. The airfield saw its share of accidents, with an estimated 40 air crashes and more than 100 aircrew killed.
The museum is displayed in the former sergeants' shower block and gives a pictorial history of the wartime years through original memorabilia and photographs of the airfield and the people who served there. A second museum, the Cornwall at War Museum, stands on the same former airfield.
