About the museum
Deal Museum is run by volunteers who have spent more than fifty years collecting and looking after objects that tell the story of Deal, Walmer and the surrounding area. The collection is displayed in a group of buildings off the High Street, close to St George's Church and the Georgian Town Hall.
The Maritime Gallery on the ground floor covers the seafaring past of the town, including the smuggling trade of the 18th century and the dangers of the Goodwin Sands. It shows two of the last surviving Deal galleys, carved stern boards, figureheads, the history of the pier and nationally significant lifejackets.
The Local History Gallery on the first floor looks at the social, commercial and industrial life of the area, including mining, baking, inns and banking. The Royal Marines Gallery, opened in 2018 in the former stable building, shows uniforms, personal keepsakes and recorded memories, along with lifeboat boards given by the RNLI. An outdoor boatyard courtyard holds boats, anchors and cannon. The museum also keeps an archive for local and family historians.
