About the museum

White Mill is a smock windmill on the edge of Sandwich in Kent, built in 1760. It was last turned by wind in 1926. An oil engine then drove the machinery until 1957. The millwright Vincent Pargeter repaired the mill in 1960 and 1961, and it is a Grade II listed building.

Sandwich Borough Council bought the mill in 1968 and it later passed to Kent County Council. A volunteer group, now the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre, began to restore it to working order in the early 2010s. The cap was taken off for repairs in 2018 and put back in 2023, and new sails were fitted in September 2025.

The mill still has its original wooden machinery, and visitors can go inside and see displays of farm machinery and equipment. The surrounding buildings include the miller’s cottage, which is furnished as it was between 1900 and 1939, a laundry and a cow shed. Former workshops, such as a forge and a wheelwright’s shop, show how the mill was once the centre of a small estate, and some are still used by craftspeople.
