About the museum
Stamford Museum opened in 1961 in the town's High Street library and moved in 1980 to a Victorian building on Broad Street, where Lincolnshire County Council's museum service ran it until 2011. Its collection told the story of the town, from Stamford Ware pottery to the eighteenth-century celebrity Daniel Lambert. The council closed the museum on 30 June 2011 because of budget cuts.
Part of the collection then returned to the High Street library, where the county council created Discover Stamford, a small heritage hub in the entrance hall and community room. It gives an overview of the history and development of the town.
The centrepiece is the Stamford Tapestry, a long embroidered hanging that took 17 years to make and was first displayed in 2000 for the millennium celebrations. Interactive displays explain the events, people and buildings that it shows. Visitors can also pick up guided maps for five themed trails around Stamford.
