About the museum
Dobson's Mill is a tower windmill in Burgh le Marsh with five sails that turn clockwise. A map of 1810 already shows a windmill on the site, and some historians date the mill to about 1813, but the present tower was most likely built in 1844. The Dobson family were the last commercial owners and worked it until the 1960s. Lincolnshire County Council then bought it for preservation, and volunteers have looked after it since.
Today the BLM Heritage Group is the custodian of the site. In February 2020 storm damage reduced the mill to a stump, and the group reports that it is waiting for the second part of a repair schedule. The mill had not stood without its sails for so long in its 180 years.
The heritage centre in the granary shows displays on village life, including the Missionary College, farming, railways and carnivals, alongside a unique collection of millwrights' patterns. The group also meets in the Granary Heritage Centre on Monday afternoons in winter.
