About the museum
The museum began as a mobile collection that its founders, Paul and Linda, took to schools in an army truck to show children what life at home was like during the Second World War. In August 2017 it opened at its present site at Freiston Shore, next to the coastal defences that were built to protect the Port of Boston. These defences, including a searchlight post and an anti-aircraft pillbox, are part of the visit.
The main displays recreate the homefront: a wartime shop counter, Women’s Land Army items, nurses’ uniforms, toys, fashion and household equipment of the 1940s, an Anderson shelter and a reconstructed police station. A Lancaster bomber cockpit holds a flight simulator, and a new RAF and Events building houses a restored Hawker Hurricane in its hangar, an RAF uniform display and a memorial display.
The museum is a registered charity run by volunteers. It has won local awards, including the Pride of Boston award in 2018, and holds the YMCA Age-friendly Business award. It also hosts events such as Armed Forces Day and Battle of Britain weekends and offers its events building for private hire.
