About the museum
Dollar Museum was set up in 1988 in a small room in the Old School House and soon outgrew it. Clackmannanshire Council offered the museum trust the Old Brunt Mill for a nominal sum, and the museum now fills two floors of this early 19th-century woollen mill, known as Castle Campbell Hall. With Heritage Lottery Fund help it doubled in size and gained a store and an archive and reading room. It is run by a charitable trust with Friends and volunteers.
The permanent displays cover the village and its surroundings from prehistoric times to the present day, including Bronze Age burial finds on loan from National Museums Scotland, a recreated Granny’s Kitchen, Castle Campbell and Dollar Academy. A working model of Dollar railway station and details of the Devon Valley Railway and Dollar Mine are also on show, together with a 25-metre timeline of local history.
The museum holds a photograph archive and research facilities, shows works by local artists, and stages a new temporary exhibition each year; it has held more than 150 since it opened.
