About the museum
The Scottish Vintage Bus Museum grew out of a proposal made in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when bus preservationists in Scotland were storing vehicles on farms and at bus depots. A joint storage and museum project was suggested and well received. In summer 1986 the collection moved to a shed in Whitburn, between Glasgow and Edinburgh, large enough for forty buses. The neighbouring dairy bought the site in 1994.
In 1995 the museum moved to Lathalmond, a former Royal Navy stores depot near Dunfermline, and the museum says it was born there on 1 March 1995. The move was completed within three months and the first open day was held that September. The museum now occupies a 49-acre site at M90 Commerce Park.
The collection includes more than 100 buses, as well as trains, a horse tram and other exhibits, with the oldest vehicles dating from the 1920s and the newest from 2004. The museum is a registered charity run by volunteers and members. Visitors can walk around the exhibition area, join a guided tour with a ride in at least one vehicle, and use the café and shop.
