About the museum
The heritage centre is housed in a clock tower built in 1816 in the grounds of the 12th-century Tironensian Benedictine Abbey in Kilwinning. North Ayrshire Council owns and maintains the tower, and volunteers from the Kilwinning Heritage group staff the centre and lead guided visits.
The displays cover the town’s papingo archery competition, local people and trades, wartime memorabilia, two of the town’s bells and the working clock mechanism from 1816. Guided visits climb 143 steps to the roof for views over the town and the surrounding countryside.
The centre has been closed since February 2025 while the council carries out repairs to the tower. Reopening is hoped for spring 2027. Meanwhile the group continues its free public talks, research projects and a community archive project.
