About the museum
The Durham Mining Museum was established in 1998 and is housed on the first floor of Spennymoor Town Hall. It is a memorial museum for the people who lost their lives in mining accidents in northern England since 1293. Its subject is not only County Durham, but also Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmorland and the ironstone mines of North Yorkshire.
The museum has three display areas. Visitors can walk through a simulated underground coalface and tunnel, which includes a life-sized model pit pony and a coal tub. Other displays show mining artefacts, models of machines, photographs, diagrams, information panels and DVD presentations.
The displays are looked after by volunteers, many of whom worked underground themselves. A large archive on mining and mining communities is also available on the museum’s website.
