About the museum
Ein Hanes, meaning 'Our History', was set up in 2016 on local initiative with support from Pembrokeshire County Council. It is run entirely by volunteers and occupies a rented former shop on Fishguard Square, close to the Town Hall and the Last Invasion Tapestry gallery. It is funded by donations and sales of cards and booklets.
The centre shows maps, photographs, newspapers, books and objects, many donated by local people, that tell the story of the twin towns of Fishguard and Goodwick. Themes include local prehistory, the growth of the area from a fishing harbour into an international port, the French invasion of 1797, the arrival of the railway in 1899, the age of the Cunard liners and the first flight from Britain to Ireland in 1912. The area's role as a film location for Moby Dick and Under Milk Wood is also covered.
Window displays use local items and artwork to show rural and maritime life. During the winter the group organises talks on historical subjects. It hopes in future to become a museum in a new location.
