About the museum
The Elizabeth Hoare Gallery is part of Liverpool Cathedral and displays an embroidery collection assembled by Elizabeth Hoare (1915–2001). Hoare was an actress who later ran the Westminster church furnishers Watts & Co. and gathered embroidery from churches and convents while visiting clients. She was a niece of Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of the cathedral, and her collection is housed in a gallery high in the cathedral building.
The cathedral describes the collection as made up of three groups: work by local women from before 1910, a large group from a convent in East Grinstead, and pieces Hoare collected herself on her travels.
The gallery is at present closed to the public. In 2026 the cathedral added objects from the collection to its page on the Art UK website so that they can be seen online while visits are not possible.
