About the museum
The Ferryman's Hut stands on Riverside Road by the harbour at Alnmouth in Northumberland. It was built as a shelter for the ferryman, who rowed passengers across the estuary of the River Aln until the service ended in the 1960s.
The hut was rented from Northumberland Estates, restored and turned into a museum of local history and memorabilia. It is paid for and maintained by a local resident. The parish council describes it as the smallest museum in Northumberland, and perhaps in the country.
Inside, framed photographs of the ferrymen and of the old Alnmouth fishermen hang on the walls, with information about the ferry and an assortment of objects from the village's past.
