About the museum

Folkestone Museum is housed in the Town Hall in Guildhall Street, a Victorian building of Portland stone that opened in 1861. The first museum collection grew out of fossils given to the town council after an auction in 1857. A natural history society formed in 1868 to press for proper premises, and a library, reading room and museum opened at Grace Hill in 1888.

Later gifts added Anglo-Saxon finds, Roman villa material and Bronze Age objects, as well as a donation of old master drawings and engravings in 1924. Care of the collection became uneven after the Second World War and the museum lost its official registration in 2007. A working group then campaigned for a new museum, Kent County Council passed the old collection to the town council in 2013, and the new museum opened to the public in spring 2017 with Heritage Lottery Fund support.

Today the displays follow the history of the town from its coastal beginnings to its time as a fashionable resort. The collections are grouped under the themes Ancient, Fashionable, Frontline, Maritime and Natural, and include butterflies, shells and fossils of national and international significance. The Town Hall itself is part of the visit.
