About the museum
Hythe Museum is run by Hythe Town Council and is housed in the Town Council building at Oaklands, Stade Street. The building was once a doctor’s home and surgery and stands beside the Royal Military Canal. Visitors reach the museum through the local library.
The collection tells the story of Hythe from Roman times and through its centuries as a Cinque Port. It includes maps, furniture, costume and civic, commercial and social objects from the town’s past. A large part of the military collection relates to the Small Arms School of Musketry, which was based in Hythe for more than a century before it moved to Warminster.
Information boards explain the displays, and some of the cases can be opened or handled. The content is pitched at different age groups, and the museum takes part in the Wheels of Time scheme for young visitors.
