About the museum
The Gerrans Parish Heritage Centre is housed in the old forge, built in the 1790s, on Tregassick Road in Gerrans. The Pearce family worked the forge continuously until 1966, after which the building became an artist's studio.
After a successful exhibition in Gerrans School to mark the Millennium, local people wanted a permanent home for the exhibits and pictures so that the history of the parish could be shown to residents and visitors. The Heritage and Information Centre opened in 2004. It is run by the local Old Cornwall Society.
The permanent exhibition covers the parish from prehistory to the modern day. Its best-known object is a pair of ox shoes found at Tregaire Farm, which was included in the BBC's History of Cornwall in 100 Objects project. An annual exhibition changes each year; past topics have included farming, trades and crafts, music in the parish, sport, tourism, wartime and the coastal edge. The centre also has a small shop with local history books, cards and gifts.
