About the museum
Goodluck Mine is a lead mine in the Derbyshire Peak District, near Matlock Bath, that was driven in 1830. The veins of lead ore were always thin, and the mine never lived up to its hopeful name. The entrance was blasted shut by the landowner in the 1950s.
Enthusiasts began restoring the mine in the 1970s, and the Mines Inspectorate approved visitor access in 2007. Since then the Goodluck Mine Preservation Club has continued to explore and open up the underground workings. A second entrance has been made through a former shaft, and parts of two neighbouring mines can now be explored.
The club describes it as a real mine, classed as working by the mines inspectorate, with no modern lighting fixtures or concrete paths. Visitors see original tubs, tools and other artefacts and learn about the characters connected with the mine since 1830. The club also keeps skills and traditions of Derbyshire lead mining alive, for example by using old methods such as plugs and feathers, and it displays a collection of mining artefacts.
