About the museum
The Steeple Grange Light Railway was built from 1985 on the trackbed of the Killer’s Branch, a former part of the Cromford and High Peak Railway in Derbyshire. The route now sits beside the High Peak Trail and describes itself as Wirksworth’s first heritage railway.
It is run entirely by volunteers and uses a narrow gauge of 18 inches (457 mm). The collection is made up of industrial locomotives that once worked in mines, quarries and factories, including diesel, petrol and battery-electric engines. Passengers sit in former manriders, the small carriages that once carried miners underground.
The main line climbs through limestone cuttings to Middleton, a round trip of about 25 minutes, and a shorter branch line runs into Steeplehouse Quarry. On most running days volunteers are on hand to answer questions and show visitors fossils found in the local limestone.
