About the museum
Guildford House was built in 1660 for John Childs, a lawyer who served three times as mayor of Guildford. In 1726 it was bought by another lawyer, John Martyr, and stayed with his family until 1850.
After that the building had many commercial uses. A brush and carpentry business used it as a shop from 1850, it became a stationer and bookseller from 1914 to 1928, and from 1929 it served as a restaurant until 1956.
Today the Grade I listed house belongs to Guildford Borough Council and works as a public art gallery. It shows a changing programme of art and craft exhibitions and events, and the building also holds a craft gift shop in the former brew house and the Guildford Tourist Information Centre.
