About the museum
Handsworth Museum is housed on the first floor of the Coach House, a Grade II listed building behind the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Handsworth, Sheffield. The church itself dates from about 1170, and parish registers survive from 1558. The museum is run by volunteers connected with the parish, and the church is exploring ways to develop it.
The building is a small stable range of about 1800 beside the church, according to a Heritage Open Days listing, while the parish describes the Coach House as of Tudor origin. It has one main room and two small side rooms. An eighteenth-century dovecote room forms part of the museum, and the visitor capacity is small.
The collection shows everyday and rarer objects from local life. Items include a 1613 copy of the King James Bible, tithe maps, local records and extracts relating to the Domesday Book. The parish registers record baptisms, marriages and burials, and the museum is a useful starting point for family history. Historical games give visitors something to try. The museum opens on set afternoons and during Heritage Open Days in September.
