About the museum
The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds city centre grew out of a partnership between Leeds City Council and the Henry Moore Foundation, which began in 1982. The Institute opened in 1993 in a new building on The Headrow, next to Leeds Art Gallery, designed by the architects Dixon Jones. It was the first purpose-built sculpture gallery in the United Kingdom.
The Institute is devoted to sculpture. Its galleries show changing exhibitions, and a permanent display called The Mezzanine is shown in Leeds Art Gallery. Alongside the exhibitions it houses the Sculpture Research Library, with more than 30,000 books, journals and audio-visual items, and the Archive of Sculptors’ Papers, which holds letters, photographs, sketchbooks and tools from sculptors’ working lives from the nineteenth century to today.
The building closed in November 2023 for its first major refurbishment. The architects Group Ginger redesigned it with a new welcome area and shop, a learning and engagement space, an improved library reception and a replaced roof with solar panels. It reopened on 12 July 2024 and admission remains free.
