About the museum
The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is part of Leeds University Library Galleries on the University of Leeds campus. The University's art collection began with a first painting in 1885 and grew through gifts, including Sir Michael Sadler's 1923 gift of English modernist works and Eric Gregory's legacy. In the 1960s Quentin Bell acquired early twentieth-century British works, many funded by Stanley and Audrey Burton, whose name the gallery bears.
The first University gallery opened in 1970 in converted offices at Parkinson Court. It first hosted mainly loan exhibitions, and from the early 1980s it moved towards showing the University's own collection. The gallery rooms were reconfigured in 1998, and in 2007 the architects Pringle Richards Sharratt merged three rooms into one larger space and improved the entrance. The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery opened in this form in March 2008.
The gallery presents exhibitions drawn from the University Art Collection and displays of treasures from the Library's Cultural Collections. The collection includes European and British paintings, drawings and prints from the 17th century to the present, with smaller holdings of sculpture, ceramics, miniatures and photographs. The gallery also runs talks, craft workshops and exhibition receptions, and it is an Arts Council England Accredited museum.
